The Institute of Human Relations (IHR) was established in 1929 at Yale University as an interdisciplinary center for cooperative research on problems of human welfare. Mark Arthur May was born in Jonesboro, Tennessee on August 12, 1891. May earned an A.B. from Maryville College in 1911, a Ph.B. from the University of Chicago in 1912, and a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University in 1917. May was a professor of educational psychology at Yale University from 1927 until his retirement in 1960.
